Sustainability

We approach sustainability in our investment activity across 3 pillars: robust governance and a strong policy framework for all Redwheel funds; centralised Stewardship expertise for our investment teams, all of whom conduct their own individual investee company engagement and Greenwheel our in-house team of sustainability research experts.

Sustainability at Redwheel

Redwheel is committed to facilitating and delivering responsible investment in practice.

In line with their investment freedoms, each investment team is responsible for the integration of sustainability considerations within their respective investment processes, consistent with firm-level policies. Adopting this approach has proved to be the best way to ensure that responsible investing is put into practice in a meaningful and genuine way, helping to maintain alignment between our interests and those of our clients.

Our investment teams are supported by specialists split across three centralised multi-disciplinary sustainability teams.

Our 3 pillar approach to sustainability

At Redwheel, we approach sustainability in our investment activity across three pillars: robust governance and a strong policy framework for all Redwheel funds; centralised stewardship expertise for our investment teams, each of which conducts its own individual investee company engagement; and Greenwheel, our in-house team of sustainability research experts.

Our in-house experts support these three pillars, all with delineated responsibilities, extensive collaboration, and a commitment to translating responsible investment theory into practice. They also provide continued support and challenge to Redwheel's investment teams.

Stewardship at Redwheel

Redwheel’s stewardship function focuses primarily on overseeing and supporting the stewardship activities of our investment teams, co-ordinating our involvement in external stewardship initiatives, and leading in the development of the stewardship that Redwheel does as a corporate entity.

Redwheel and its investment teams strongly believe that the consideration of both material financial and material sustainability factors within a fully integrated investment process can help to enhance assessments of risk and return. Active stewardship is vital within this to protect and enhance the long-term interests of our clients, on the one hand as part of risk discovery and risk mitigation, whilst on the other supporting the implementation of best practice, reducing the adverse environmental and social impacts of operations, and encouraging investment in long-term value creation opportunities.

What is Sustainability Strategy, Governance & Policy?

Sustainability Strategy, Governance and Policy focuses in three areas:

- Setting and developing the strategy for sustainability at Redwheel within the context of its portfolio management business

- Providing advice, support and oversight in relation to the integration of sustainability considerations within investment processes

- Designing and implementing investment policy relating to sustainability.

How it works

In addition to providing advice and support to Redwheel and its investment teams, Sustainability Strategy, Governance and Policy contributes to the evolution of Redwheel’s approach to responsible investment in both a conceptual and operational sense by:

- Selecting and overseeing sustainability data providers

- Managing Redwheel's Sustainability Committee and various subgroups, communicating with a range of key internal and external stakeholders

- Providing subject matter expertise to colleagues across the central business (e.g. providing responsible investment related insights during product developments and contributing to RFP responses)

- Contributing to the collective business-wide effort to provide ongoing education and training in relation to sustainability.

What is Greenwheel?

Greenwheel is the sustainability insights partner to Redwheel’s Sustainable, Transition and Enhanced Integration funds. Greenwheel provides tailored thematic and sector level sustainability research and advice to fund managers, commissioned by fund managers, at every stage of the product lifecycle from fund design through to investment research and engagement support, dependent on each team’s needs and requirements.

The core values of Greenwheel are independence, partnership and innovation.

Greenwheel experts work closely with Redwheel’s relevant fund managers to build specialist robust processes, tools and frameworks designed to maximise sustainable investing opportunities and help minimise sustainability risks and ultimately produce enhanced impact for our clients.

How it works

Greenwheel is made up of a core team of experts specialised in climate, environmental and social research with a range of experience from asset management, academia, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and working on-the-ground with companies on sustainability issues.

This combination of disciplines and focus areas provides both breadth and depth for sustainable investing teams at Redwheel to draw on.

Fund managers commission thematic and sector level research from the team for the purposes of building product, investment research, idea generation or to inform or advance an engagement.

In addition to this in-house expertise, Greenwheel’s experts bring with them deep networks that can be drawn upon to provide a variety of specialist perspectives from outside the asset management industry.

Finally, the Greenwheel Fellowship programme, an academic partnership that brings graduate students into the Greenwheel team for specific, fund manager-commissioned research projects, completes the flexible insights model allowing Greenwheel to be nimble and investment outcome focused.
